The Town of Rye Hosted it's FIRST! Community Service Project on October 6th and 7th at Crawford Park!

9/11 Days of Community Service

(Town of Rye, NY)─September 10, 2018─ The Town of Rye and The Friends of Crawford Park have joined together to create two volunteer opportunities in the community as part of the 9/11 National Day of Service. Last Sunday, September 9th, a group of volunteers met in Crawford Park to help maintain the trees and wildflower garden. This Sunday, September 16th, The Town of Rye and The Friends of Crawford Park will host a second Day of Service and volunteers are still needed.

Crawford Park is a jewel for Rye Town residents and the tremendous trees so elegantly grace the park, but they are in desperate need of the eradication of invasive vines and weeds. On Sunday’s Day of Service, volunteers will help remove encroaching vines from the trees and remove weeds from the wildflower garden. This effort will help keep the native trees strong and flowers thriving reducing the need for costly clean-up when plants are weakened or displaced.

Despite the rain, the first Day of Service was a positive and productive day. Under the supervision of Bob DelTorto, volunteers of all ages freed a number of trees from the strangulation of invasive vines. “During visits to the park, I was never aware of the invasive vines wrapped around the trees which were threatening their lives and depriving them of water, sunlight and nutrients all vital for their healthy growth,” stated Town Clerk, Hope B. Vespia, “It was so gratifying to know that as a joint effort the volunteers were affording them a healthier life.”
